Language is an important means of human communication to share information, opinions and emotions with others. Language barriers can therefore lead to communication difficulties. An interpreter can be a valuable tool in situations where two people do not share a common language. In these situations, the interpreter’s job is to convey the meaning of conversations to the participants verbally and in real time. During in-person interpreting, the interpreter is present in person to interpret a conversation between two or more parties in one room. It is customary for in-person interpreters to travel between assignments. In-person interpreting is therefore recommended in time-consuming and/or complex assignments.

Things to keep in mind when using in-person interpreting

It is important to create the best conditions for a successful in-person interpretation. Here are our top tips:

- Plan your time well. A conversation through an interpreter takes longer than a regular conversation because the interpreter has to repeat everything that is said.
- Position yourselves in a triangle with the interpreter at the head, so that the interpreter can clearly see gestures and facial expressions. The client and the person being interpreted for need to face each other so you can have eye contact during the conversation.
- Speak in the first person directly to the person you are meeting and not to the interpreter. The interpreter is simply a tool that allows two people who do not speak the same language to understand one another.
- Speak calmly and concisely, about three to four sentences at a time, so that the interpreter has time to convey the words.
- The interpreter translates everything that is said. Make sure to say only what you want the other person to have interpreted.
- It is your job to make sure that the other person understands what you mean. Ask the client to summarise what you have talked about to ensure that the message has been conveyed correctly.
